| Track and Race Cars Magazine Monoposto Championship Croft 27 September 2009 1000,1400 and 1800 Practice Monoposto is a great formula, not just for the on track action, but for the paddock atmosphere. After her disaster in Saturday's race, Kat Impey's Jedi was looking good, except for a non-working silencer. The team thought of cutting and shutting the old one, but Peter Whitmore, unable to get his RF05 running, offered his silencer, so all was well.
Geoff Fern got through his third front wing of the weekend, and having run out of wings elected to do the race without one at either end, which sounded an interesting prospect. Dave Rippin got 11 laps in, which sounded optimistic.Lance Pritchard, after qualifying second 1800, was unfortuanatley unable to start due to clutch troubles. Chris Woodhouse was on pole, but if you didn't guess that then you haven't been paying attention. Race It looked as though it was going to go wrong for Chris at the start. As the lights went out he stalled (probably too much tyre warming from an ex-sprinter) and had to hit the starter. He entered the first corner fifth, and left it second, and then started off in pursuit of Kat who had taken the lead. He passed her in the complex, and thereafter they circulated one and two, with Chrus keeping just out of Kat's rach on the way to a new 1000 record. The next pair were Stephen Brookes in his 1000cc 1400 (who also took a new record) and Geoff Fern who had finally run out of front wings and so to balance the car took the back off. He then proceeded to embarrass all those who said you can't take Barcroft (the fast kink) flat without downforce by taking Barcroft flat without downforce. At least, that's how it looked from the banks. Darren Feeman qualified well in third but had a problem on the dummy grid and failed to leave it without a push for the green flag lap.As a resault he staretd from the back and had to work up the field. 16th over the line, 10th at the end of lap 1, 8th on lap 3, 5th on lap 4 and momentarily up to 4th on lap 9, after which Geoff re-took the place. It was a heroic drive and if Darren hadn't had the problems and Geoff had had wings, what a race we could have seen! Remember what I said about taking Barcroft flat without downforce? Matt Hayes managed it most times in his Jamun. But on one he didn't and there was an almighty cloud of locked up Avons, a big wiggle and an audible sigh from whoever washes Matt's overalls. Nonethless, a very impressive run to 1800 class victory, just ahead (about 0.35 seconds) of Jim Timms. Philip Nicholson finshed third in class, but not without swapping places several times with Michael Dale. Here are the final results:
